Hypercode is a collection of handwoven rugs, designed by Roberto Sironi for cc-tapis.
Based on the designer research and documentation of inscriptions both contemporary and prehistoric, from all over the world, Roberto Sironi merges mythological symbols, ancient carvings, enigmatic glyphs and crude urban graffiti to form a new aesthetic language – giving life to a new narrative: a collection which explores humanity’s innate need to leave a physical mark on its surroundings, a visual reminder with which to communicate through time and space.
While the collection draws aesthetic inspiration from the contemporary world, its essence remains deeply rooted in tradition. Historically, rugs have served as narrative artifacts, where warp and weft intertwine to recount the stories of peoples, cultures, and individuals. Each piece in the collection conveys messages through symbols and languages that transcend immediate comprehension.
Using the jacquard weaving technique applied to a traditional Indian handloom, master artisans seamlessly weave tradition and innovation by hand, crafting intricate patterns that become visual codes. By layering solemn Greco-Roman inscriptions, enigmatic Japanese mythological symbols, spontaneous declarations of love, and the ironic smiley face, Hypercode transforms the rug into a palimpsest of timeless stories.
In this composition of signs and graphics, elements of undeciphered scripts such as Etruscan, Rongorongo, Linear A, and Cypro-Minoan take shape, creating a visual code that transcends linear time.
